"My name is Belinda. Be-lin-da!"

The Front Room, directed by the Eggers Brothers, delivers a chilling psychological horror experience, though it’s often hard to watch. The film revolves around Belinda, a pregnant woman struggling with the presence of her husband’s estranged stepmother, Solange, who moves into their home under the guise of reconciliation. Solange’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and intrusive, challenging Belinda’s sanity and the couple’s relationship. The film raises profound questions about familial obligations and boundaries, leaving viewers to ponder: What would you do if a relative acted like this?

The narrative excels at creating an atmosphere of unease, mainly through Kathryn Hunter’s performance as Solange, whose grotesque presence and unsettling religious zealotry are the film’s highlight. However, some scenes delve into disturbingly graphic territory, making it a challenging watch.

The movie leaves viewers contemplating moral dilemmas, such as whether one can truly help someone suffering from such intense issues and how to support a spouse while managing a tumultuous home life. The film also explores the difficult decisions one might face when trying to balance work and family, especially when a loved one is struggling with mental health or spiritual fanaticism.

Overall, The Front Room is a compelling yet uncomfortable watch, with solid performances and a gripping, albeit disturbing, storyline. While not for everyone, it’s worth a watch for those who appreciate psychological horror that delves into the darker sides of family dynamics and personal boundaries.
