“Oddity” is a unique horror thriller directed by Damian McCarthy. It explores grief, betrayal, and the supernatural. The plot centers around Darcy, a blind medium with psychometric abilities who seeks to uncover the truth behind her twin sister’s murder. The story intricately weaves in a mysterious wooden mannequin that appears to hold supernatural powers, intensifying the eerie atmosphere.
The film shines in its atmospheric tension, with strong performances from Carolyn Bracken, who portrays both Darcy and her deceased twin sister, Dani. The Irish countryside setting adds an isolated and haunting backdrop, perfectly complementing the film’s macabre themes. The life-sized mannequin, crafted with unsettling realism, is an effective horror device reminiscent of classic films like “Child’s Play” but with a unique twist.
However, “Oddity” struggles with pacing issues, particularly in the first half, where the build-up feels sluggish. While the movie’s central mystery is compelling, the narrative sometimes veers into convoluted territory, with subplots that don’t fully develop or resolve. The film’s climax, though visually striking, feels somewhat predictable for seasoned horror fans, which detracts from the overall impact.
The character dynamics, particularly between Darcy and Ted, played by Gwilym Lee, provide depth but occasionally falter due to inconsistent writing. The film attempts to balance psychological horror with supernatural elements, and while it succeeds in creating an eerie ambiance, it occasionally falls short of delivering genuine scares.
Despite its flaws, “Oddity” is a commendable effort showcasing McCarthy’s director potential. The film will likely resonate more with horror enthusiasts who appreciate atmospheric storytelling over relentless jump scares. It’s a film that feels at home in the festival circuit but might struggle to find a broader audience in mainstream horror.
